Star Wars Spin-Off: 10 Lessons Gareth Edwards Must Learn From Godzilla
3. More Strong Female Characters
Another claim against Gareth Edwards' Godzilla is its lack of strong female characters. While it could be argued that Elizabeth Olsen's Elle displays a different sort of strength (some people really seem to miss that), the criticism has some merit. Godzilla is mostly male-centric, with female characters such as Elle Brody and Vivienne Graham acting mostly as supporting players for their male counterparts. Since many of the Toho Godzilla films do have female characters at the centre of their stories, this was a lost opportunity to pay even greater respect towards the classics. It is an issue that doesn't ruin the film, but is worth discussing nonetheless. While the Star Wars films are lacking in quantity of female characters, they make up for it in quality, as Leia and Padme both displayed great strength and intelligence. Both screenwriter Gary Whitta and Gareth Edwards should keep this in mind when formulating the story, because you can be sure that people will call them out on it if Star Wars suffers the same issue Godzilla has. Chances are that the protagonist will be Boba Fett or young Han Solo or something, which means probably no female lead, but as long as they pepper the supporting cast with interesting female characters that young fans can relate to, this issue shouldn't be a problem for Gareth's next film.
