Star Wars: The Best Moment From Every Movie, Ranked

7. Luke's Mistake - Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi

Empire Strikes Back
Lucasfilm

For all the tiresome talk surrounding The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker's development in the film remains one of the franchise's most affecting risks.

After hunting the estranged Jedi down on the planet Anch-To, Rey attempts to lure Luke back to the Resistance, to his sister and the cause he so suddenly left behind. Why did he leave? The question lingers, until finally he breaks his silence and tells Rey how and why he became such a shell of the Master he once was.

As it turns out, Luke was training Ben Solo in the ways of the Force but, after a visceral vision showed him Ben turning to the Dark Side, he decided to kill his own nephew to prevent calamity. This betrayal is what, rather ironically, drove Ben to become Kylo Ren.

It's a haunting scene, powerfully performed by Mark Hamill, and the kind of daring twist that Star Wars doesn't really try anymore. Luke is flawed and human, like all Jedi, and Kylo a lost soul in need of the guidance his old Master couldn't give him.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
