Jakku was one of the earliest things fans got to see in some detail from The Force Awakens, (a desert planet strewn with original trilogy era-wreckage is a pretty strong mission statement, after all), which is pretty fitting as it’s actually one of the earliest things developed for the film.

It originally came from the question of what happened to the second Death Star; some of the most well-known concept art showed it submerged, with characters diving into its bowels in search of information, but one drawing went a different direction and showed it half-sunk into dunes of sand. Over time, this idea of crashed ships in the desert shifted to its own separate conflict, with cruisers instead of the space station, and the ball droid just rolled from there.
