Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 Fears Alleviated By The Teaser Trailer

2. It Looks To Have Taken A Few Risks

The Fear: The filmmakers would be too afraid to try anything new. Why The Teaser Eased That Fear: Remember Watchmen? As good as that movie was in places, its biggest flaw came from its inability to unhinge itself from the source material on which it was based. Which is to say: director Zack Snyder was so terrified of upsetting Watchmen fans, that he pretty much filmed the comic book exactly as it was. Which meant, of course, that the film couldn't breathe: it felt trapped by itself. Star Wars: Episode VII could end up similarly if Abrams and company find themselves fretting over whether they should take story risks because they're afraid of upsetting fans. But, of course, they should take a few risks - nobody wants to see the same stuff all over again. Fortunately, the teaser shows - what with a Stormtrooper as a freakin' character - that they seem to be willing to try new things.
