Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 "Mind-Boggling Twist" Theories

9. Luke Is The Villain

No matter how much it upsets fans to acknowledge it, there is a distinct possibility that Luke Skywalker has been twisted by his experiences with the Dark Side and has eventually followed in his father's footsteps to become a Sith.

It's the twist we're all being encouraged to believe, given Disney's removal of Luke from the marketing material (and the ominous suggestion that there is a big reason for it), and it fits both Mark Hamill and JJ Abrams' expressed desires to turn Luke dark.

Any Evidence?

He might be presented as a messianic figure by the end of the original trilogy, but there are moments on his journey that suggest he isn't all good. If his consciously sinister black outfit wasn't a blatant enough nod to his capacity for evil, you need only consider the threat he makes to Jabba the Hutt in "negotiation" over Han Solo:

"You can profit by this, or be destroyed. But I warn you not to underestimate my powers."

That doesn't exactly fit with The Jedi Way (particularly as Jabba isn't really an immediate threat) and it is delivered with a chill. And the whole point of both Star Wars trilogies is that the most powerful Force figures have the greatest capacity for darkness.

Plus, there's the compelling idea that Star Wars "rhymes" - as suggested by George Lucas - and having Luke's path mirror his father's would be the perfect poetry.
