Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 Simple Explanations That Would Have Improved The Film
5. How Did Maz Kanata Attain Luke's Lightsaber?
This is something that audiences really shouldn't have had to wait two years to find out an answer to. Episode VII should have told us how Maz Kanata got Luke's lightsaber. For one, Maz having the saber in her possession "just 'cause" feels like a cop-out - like lazy screenwriting, as opposed to something "deeply mysterious." We don't know Maz, after all; she's a new character, albeit one with Yoda-like characteristics, and there's no hint of an explanation as to how she might have wound up with the lightsaber that went missing at the end of The Empire Strikes Back. Even half an explanation would have improved the film a lot in this particular regard, with Maz saying something along the lines of: "I was given this weapon a long time ago and told to keep it until the moment was right." Some enigmatic exposition would have been appreciated, because - at this point - what we get feel a little contrived.
