Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 Things Everybody Missed In The Final Trailer

1. The Rotoscoped Lightsaber Effect

There's been a distinct lack of lighsaber action in the promotion thus far (something that's rather fitting given parallel movie A New Hope's similar lack of swordfighting), although we do get a bit more here; the final trailer climaxes with a short-but-sweet money shot that teases one of the film's big clashes, Kylo Ren vs. Finn. There's a lot to learn in this brief moment, but everyone seems to be so blown away by the villain's helmet-less head and his ragged weapon (looks like it's a homemade effort from Kylo) they haven't spend much time on the other sword in the battle. And why would you? Finn's wielding Anakin's lightsaber, something we saw plenty of in Episode III, IV and V - what more could be new about it? Well, something very exciting it turns out. The original lightsaber effect was created using rotoscoping, with the glow added over the on-set sticks. This left the rather strange side-effect of the laser's glow flickering somewhat. As computer effects having advanced in leaps and bounds by the time the prequels rolled around, this glimmering was removed in favour of more solid lighting, but it now looks like J.J. Abrams has chosen to reverse that step and go backwards; as Kylo walks up to Finn, there's a distinct varying glow that appears to be invoking the originals' accidental style. Now that is awesome. A minor detail born of period technological limitations that is being worked into the wider mythology. If you've been even slightly sceptical about the prospect of new Star Wars, this sort of attention to detail should give you hope. What else was there hidden in the final Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer?
