Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 Ways It's A Remake Of A New Hope
9. The Rey/Luke Skywalker Parallel
Rey (played wonderfully by newcomer Daisy Ridley), Jakku scavenger and central protagonist of The Force Awakens, is obviously a character who is supposed to draw parallels with the classic trilogy's original Luke Skywalker. This was intentional on the filmmaker's part. They took the fan advice and opted for the "Hero's Journey" arc. Everything from the fact that she dresses like Luke in a New Hope, is a capable pilot, lives a lowly life on a crummy desert planet lauded over by thieves and scumbags, to her being "destined" for a whole lot more (and not yet knowing it), all falls in line with the idea that The Force Awakens is essentially a 2015 retread of A New Hope. She even winds up being plunged in the story the same way that Luke does: by way of an encounter with a droid, only this time it's BB-8 instead of R2-D2. Granted, the biggest difference between the two characters is that Rey can handle herself. Luke, on the other hand, started out as a plucky wimp; Rey is a bit of a badass from the beginning.
