Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 Ways It's A Remake Of A New Hope

8. The Darth Vader/Kylo Ren Parallel

Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) is clearly supposed to evoke memories of Star Wars' most famous villain, Darth Vader - and that's the point. Ren is an admitted Vader fanboy, the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia who - after Luke Skywalker failed to train him as a Jedi - turned to the Dark Side out of some misplaced duty to fulfil his grandfather's destiny. Ren is Vader in so many ways. To state the obvious, the character dresses like Darth Vader - complete with mask - in an attempt to honour his fallen idol. Filtered through said mask, his voice is rendered similar to that of Vader's, too. And finally, the character's journey - that of a conflicted Jedi lured to the Dark Side - is akin to that of Anakin Skywalker's own. Obi-Wan tells the story of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side to Luke in A New Hope, and Han Solo tells the story of Kylo Ren's fall to Rey in Force Awakens. These characters are near duplicates of one another, though with good reason: Ren wants to be as close to Vader as possible, so he has modelled himself as such; a self-proclaimed second coming.
