Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 7 Biggest Unanswered Questions

5. What Exactly Is The Map To Luke Skywalker?

Because Star Wars rhymes (George Lucas' words, not mine), The Force Awakens is motivated by everyone chasing a droid for the important information they're carrying, just like A New Hope. But whereas in the original movie we knew exactly what the Death Star plans were, where they came from and what they could do, it's all a bit mysterious what the Kryptonian drive BB-8's carrying is for and, once that's explained, where it comes from.

OK, so it's the map to find Luke Skywalker, but what does that mean? Did he make it? Who goes into exile and leaves breadcrumbs for their psycho nephew to follow? And why was it all fractured, with the Empire and R2 each having some in their databases, but one final piece missing? It's a MacGuffin, sure, but it'd be nice to have it make some sense. Perhaps Luke was following it himself, looking for that Temple Han mentioned. But then that's just another question.

And even if we do know where it comes from, how how did Max von Sydow get the one final piece. In fact, what the hell was up with that...
