Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 7 Questions The Trailer Didn't Answer

4. What Exactly Was It That Vader Started?

€œNothing will stand in our way. I will finish what you started€, says Kylo Ren in the little snippet of the trailer, which gives us the most obviously narratively leading tidbit. The way that the trailer lingers over Darth Vader€™s smushed up helmet while Kylo says the above certainly heavily implies that Kylo€™s role will be a fanatical Vader fanboy who wants to complete his hero€™s work. It€™s safe to assume that Kylo Ren€™s going to be the Big Bad this time round, given that he€™s wearing a big doomy cloak, and has a big red evil lightsaber with which he seems intent on hacking Finn to bits. Nice guys don€™t hack people to bits; they just don€™t. However, it isn€™t quite clear what exactly the nature of Kylo's mission actually is. The natural assumption is that he€™s a kind of Darth Vader for our time, carrying on the big guy€™s work. Anakin/Vader was prophesied to bring balance to the Force, after all; it might well be that this is the mission Kylo€™s referring to, whether by resurrecting the Sith-Jedi duality or by eradicating the Force€™s proponents from the galaxy altogether. It might also be that Kylo's talking to Luke, who some fans have guessed was a former mentor of Kylo - Luke's the only Jedi strong and learned enough to teach a young, raw Padawan the ways of the Force, after all - but that he rebelled against his tutor just as Vader did, and is intent on taking the darker path to a 'balanced' galaxy. If there's just Luke left on the good side of the Force, that would mean Kylo taking up arms for the Dark Side to keep things on an even keel and continue Vader's work.
