Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 7 Questions The Trailer Didn't Answer

1. What Exactly Has Luke Been Up To, And Why Isn€™t He Hanging With Han And Leia?

One of the major talking points has been Luke€™s complete absence from the official poster - there€™s Finn, Rey, Han, Leia, Chewie, Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma, but no Luke. Luke€™s only very slightly more in evidence in this second trailer. We get a metallic hand cosseting R2-D2€™s flank, and a voiceover echoing some key words from Return of the Jedi. That€™s it. It might be that he€™s taking on the same sort of role as Yoda: lying low until another proponent of the Force is dredged up and in need of mentoring. He€™s an extremely powerful guy - the most powerful and learned Jedi in the galaxy by a distance - so he€™s snuck off for both his own wellbeing and the wellbeing of the people around him. The film is called The Force Awakens, after all - maybe Luke€™s frightened of this new surge in the Force after it€™s been so quiet for so long (everyone bangs on in the original trilogy about how weak it is compared to the good old days) and removes himself from the fray as things hot up. Or, he might well be a more abstract presence in The Force Awakens, a kind of haunting, ghostly foreshadow of battles to come. The Jedi have ascended from mythological to legendary status since the events of Return of the Jedi (€œAre the stories true?€, asks Rey; €œAll of it€, replies Han), so the new characters will have little idea of who he is or what he can do, or even if he really exists. It might well be that Luke€™s importance and influence will grow over the course of the trilogy. Which other questions did you most want the final Star Wars The Force Awakens trailer to answer?
