Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 8 Scenes The Movie Desperately Needed
7. Maz Kanata Explains How She Got Luke's Lightsaber
Yeah, yeah: Maz Kanata tells Han that it's "a good question for another time" in reference to her having Luke Skywalker's original lightsaber in her possession, but isn't that just the laziest moment of screenwriting you ever witnessed in your entire life? Whilst there's a lot of "purposeful" ambiguity in the The Force Awakens, there are some things - like this - that really should have been better explained. Why wouldn't Maz tell Han how she got hold of the lightsaber? There's no reason to hold back the information from Han; she's just holding it back because the writers didn't want to have to come up with a reason. And now Rian Johnson, director of Episode VIII, has inherited the problem. There should have been a scene in The Force Awakens, then, in which Maz tells Han and Finn (or Rey, even) how she attained the iconic weapon. There was a lot of vagueness in Episode VII - some of it justified - but the movie should have bothered to explain this.
