Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 8 Things You Need To Know About The New Lightsaber

8. They€™ve Appeared Before

Starting with an important point, lightsabers with this type of design aren€™t exactly new to the Star Wars universe. In the Expanded Universe the crossguard lightsaber is extremely rare but is in existence. Also known as the forked lightsaber, it€™s essentially just a lightsaber with a second blade emitter. That of course creates the crossguard that's seen in the trailer. The best-known wielder of a blade like this was the Jedi Roblio Darté, whose lightsaber had two blue blades. His particular weapon had a curved hilt rather than the straight one in the trailer though, so there is a marked difference in their design. Having said all that, the Expanded Universe has been totally disregarded by Disney so technically they€™ve never existed until now. However, that clearly hasn€™t stopped JJ Abrams doing his homework on the Star Wars lore, and that can€™t be a bad thing at all. Hopefully the film will see similar attention to detail across the board, meaning that the expanded universe that many have come love hasn€™t been as abandoned as previously thought.
