8. Theyve Appeared Before
Starting with an important point, lightsabers with this type of design arent exactly new to the Star Wars universe. In the Expanded Universe the crossguard lightsaber is extremely rare but is in existence. Also known as the forked lightsaber, its essentially just a lightsaber with a second blade emitter. That of course creates the crossguard that's seen in the trailer. The best-known wielder of a blade like this was the Jedi Roblio Darté, whose lightsaber had two blue blades. His particular weapon had a curved hilt rather than the straight one in the trailer though, so there is a marked difference in their design. Having said all that, the Expanded Universe has been totally disregarded by Disney so technically theyve never existed until now. However, that clearly hasnt stopped JJ Abrams doing his homework on the Star Wars lore, and that cant be a bad thing at all. Hopefully the film will see similar attention to detail across the board, meaning that the expanded universe that many have come love hasnt been as abandoned as previously thought.
