Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 9 New Cast Members' Best Roles So Far
2. Domhnall Gleeson - Calvary
Former Harry Potter star Domhnall Gleeson has carved himself out a nice career as an indie leading man lately, with notable starring roles in the likes of Anna Karenina, Frank and Ex Machina all coming in the last three years. Gleeson's best performance to date, however, can be found in a film where he gets only a cameo role. It's a hell of a part though, as Gleeson undermines his innate likeability in John Michael McDonagh's Calvary to become detached and curiously dead-eyed. Playing opposite dad Brendan, Domhnall Gleeson is Calvary's most shocking asset - he's essentially got a few lines, but he imbues cannibalistic serial killer Freddie Joyce with such reptilian iciness it's almost difficult to watch. It's creepy because Gleeson is normally so dorky and loveable, whereas here you genuinely believe he's a man with an appetite for the odd scrap of human flesh. With his role in The Force Awakens so shrouded in mystery, you can at least rest easy knowing that Gleeson has shown off the range to pull off whatever Abrams has given him to do.
