1. Oscar Isaac - Inside Llewyn Davis
It's almost maddening that Oscar Isaac has produced so much great work over just the past few years; when the films have included A Most Violent Year, Ex Machina, The Two Faces Of January and Drive, it makes picking just one standout difficult. Isaac is the kind of actor for whom the term 'chameleonic' was invented, what with his ability to play every nationality and type of human under the sun. The best performance to date from the man who is to play Poe Dameron, though, came in what is probably his best movie to date: Inside Llewyn Davis. In the Coen brothers' dark existential drama, Isaac is the eponymous Welsh-Italian folksinger playing early-'60s New York dives for change and, considering he's such a jerk, it's probably no less than he deserves. Isaac is effortlessly funny and sympathetic in the role, even when he's testing you and everyone around him to actually stay on his side. Watch Isaac in the film and be impressed, then watch him in the others listed above and be impressed all over again by the sheer range he has to offer. Disagree with these choices?
