Why They Could Live: There's only one reason needed to explain their survival here: nostalgia. The hopes, dreams and sheer joy of several generations of people would be crushed in an instant if any one of these three lovable, iconic characters were to die. It would be a major gamble to kill any one of them off, especially Chewie, considering that it's at least possible for the robotic characters to be resurrected with a backup chip or something. Why They Could Die: For one, Chewie is roughly 230 years old in Episode VII, so despite looking relatively youthful in that brief trailer glimpse, he could go the way of Yoda and die in dignity. It seems more likely he'll go out in sacrificial style for the sake of the new heroes, though, which would give them a major boost moving forward. Also, Peter Mayhew's age will soon prevent him from moving around so easily in the suit, so it makes sense. As for C-3PO and R2? Their deaths don't have anywhere near the same consequence, as they can always be brought back with some tech wizardry. Prediction: All three survive, because the feels would just be too damn much.
