The casting of the legendary Max von Sydow in The Force Awakens left many fans' heads spinning. Surely, the casting of the veteran actor had to mean he'd have a huge part to play in the film, otherwise why cast him at all? Over the months, theories ranged from his character being the ultimate "big bad" pulling the strings to a Jedi, but it all turned out to be nothing as big. After the film drops hints about his backstory and allows him to set Poe - and the plot - into motion, he's quickly killed off by Kylo Ren, with the mystery surrounding his character being left in the dust mere minutes into the film. It's a certainty that his relevance will be expanded upon in the future; if not in one of the upcoming films, then definitely in the comics, books, etc. that will be making up the new franchise canon from here on out. But as it stands within the context of The Force Awakens, the character is easily the most disappointing new face, merely for the fact many expected von Sydow to have a lot more to do.
