10. Subplots

No prizes for guessing which movies wins this round.

The subplots in The Force Awakens blended seamlessly into the central narrative, after all. Finn trying to escape from the First Order, Han and Chewbacca getting back the Millennium Falcon, the subtle romance between Rey and Finn... these all felt natural to the experience and intertwined organically with the main story, which involved Rey escaping Jakku and coming to terms with her Force powers.

The Last Jedi's subplots are, frankly, quite bizarre, the most infamous of which involves Finn and new character Rose heading to a casino planet in an attempt to find a codebreaker. There, they meet a character called DJ, which spins off into yet another subplot that goes nowhere. Oh, and don't forget that underwhelming non-subplot featuring Captain Phasma, or that romance between Finn and Rose that blossoms out of nowhere and feels entirely inauthentic.

Winner: The Last Jedi is going to be remembered for a long time for its bewildering subplots, which simply don't work and aren't given the time they need to feel earned. The Force Awakens takes yet another point.
