Star Wars: The Force Awakens Vs The Last Jedi - Which Is Better?

6. Plot Twists

Star Wars has always been infamous for its plot twists, ever since the days of "No, I am your father!" It's not surprising that both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi make use of this cinematic trope in unexpected ways, then.

The biggest plot twist in The Force Awakens had Kylo Ren killing his own father in a scene that was oddly unemotional but set a precedent for a new Star Wars trilogy where nobody, not even the classic characters, were safe.

The Last Jedi, on the other hand, kills off the trilogy's supposed villain mid-way through the film, spends most of its runtime setting up heroic moments only to subvert them entirely, informs us that Rey's parents were of no importance, and then culminates with the death of Luke Skywalker. Good God.

Winner: The Last Jedi wins this round with gusto because everything it did was entirely unexpected, whereas lots of audience members still sensed Han's death coming from a mile off (shocking as it was anyway).
