Star Wars: The Force Awakens Vs The Last Jedi - Which Is Better?
7. Music
The Force Awakens' score isn't one of John Williams best, but it's pretty amazing when you consider it against every other modern blockbuster soundtrack. The world's greatest film composer did a nice job setting up some new character themes here, and masterfully blended them with several classic leitmotifs from the original trilogy. Rey's theme stood out, as did the First Order theme.
Sadly The Last Jedi might stand as Williams' least memorable Star Wars score because it reuses so much of what came before, especially material from The Force Awakens. There are a few new theme and musical cues on show, but the most memorable-sounding stuff is still either from The Force Awakens or the classic trilogy. It's nice to hear it all on a nostalgia level, but a bit unnecessary when you consider how brilliantly original the prequel trilogy scores were.
Winner: The Last Jedi arguably makes for a more satisfying listening experience when you separate the score from the movie, but The Force Awakens' score has a lot more original content, so it has to win this round.
