Kieron Gillen - much like Soule too - has had a big part to play in creating this new lore for the reinvigorated Star Wars canon. The writer has previously helmed critically acclaimed runs on the X-Men, The Wicked + The Divine and Young Avengers, and while they're all brilliant in their own right, it does feel like he's found his calling with Darth. Vader, that is.

The series ended late last year (giving way to the equally brilliant Doctor Aphra), but its 25 issue run is easy to digest and even easier to enjoy. Focussing on the period between episodes IV and V, Gillen explores the character in a Force Unleashed vein, analysing his motivations and, more importantly, his relationship with the Emperor.

It's a brilliant series, and one that Gillen used to really examine the intricacies of Vader's relationship with the Imperial brass. There's politics and drama aplenty, but one of its most interesting aspects is the aforementioned dichotomy presented between Vader - an intermediary between the Emperor and the Imperial Navy - and his officers; he straight up resents their lack of belief in the Force.

It's just a brilliant book, and one all Vader fans simply must check out.
