5. Time Travel!

The Theory

Another charming Snoke theory suggests that Snoke is actually a time-travelling Kylo Ren, who has somehow managed to master time travel and is appearing to his younger self to encourage his turn to the Dark Side earlier and more successfully than happened in the original time-line.

Think of it as a sort of Biff Tannen gambit fresh out of the playbook.

What would make it even more poetic is if Snoke had lived his life initially as a Light allied character and saw the death of the Empire and the catastrophic imbalance of the Force and realised he had to turn to the Dark Side to save the galaxy.

Some have pointed to his scars as an indication that he's the same guy, but Ren's face in The Last Jedi is far less grotesque than Snokes, so that's probably no indication.

Would It Be Shocking Enough?

Time travel would be a massive deal, even if it was a little hokey, and the reveal that Kylo Ren needed to be Dark Sided in order to re-establish Order would also be pretty major. It would also set off some serious Jump The Shark alarms among the fanbase, though.
