Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 10 Ways It Sets Up Episode IX

1. Rey And The Sacred Jedi Texts

After following Luke round Ahch-To for a little while, Rey is compelled to explore an ancient, hollowed-out tree. Within this tree is a collection of sacred Jedi texts, books which contain information about the Force, and early teachings of the Jedi Order.

Later in the film, Yoda appears and sets this tree on fire, and it's presumed the texts perished along with it. But later, it's revealed that Rey is in possession of them, as they're seen stowed away on the Millennium Falcon.

Rey went to Luke looking for answers, so it stands to reason she'd want to take these books for herself after Luke proved so stubborn. But what does she do with them next?

Since Rey is the last remaining Jedi with any sort of training under her belt, she's the only person capable of rebuilding the Jedi Order, and these texts could help her do it. Episode IX could see her becoming a Jedi master - maybe she even teaches the young Force kid on Canto Bight - using the lessons in these texts to help her better understand the way of the Jedi.

Rian Johnson hasn't just put these books aboard the Falcon for no reason - they were deliberately left in view, teasing us with a plot that could arrive in Episode IX. Whatever this plot turns out to be, this is not the last we've seen of this ancient books.
