Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 10 Ways It Sets Up Episode IX
2. More Information About Snoke
For a lot of fans, the fact that The Last Jedi doesn't reveal anything about Snoke's backstory is a massive disappointment.
The villain was presented as a mystery in The Force Awakens, a purposeful move that led many to believe The Last Jedi would shed light on said mystery. But it didn't.
However, that doesn't mean this is the last we've heard of the character - far from it. It was never stated that Episode VIII would be the movie that gave us answers about Snoke, and with Rian Johnson not giving us any information at all, Abrams has a chance to fill in some of the blanks, should he choose to do so.
The fact that Episode VIII doesn't reveal much about him gives Episode IX a golden opportunity. By not providing any answers about Snoke, The Last Jedi has simply pushed that reveal - if there is one - to the next movie.
Of course, The Last Jedi proves that nothing is guaranteed, but given that Snoke was created by Abrams for The Force Awakens, he must have some idea in his head about exactly who this character is.
