Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 10 Ways It Sets Up Episode IX
3. The Rise Of The Rebellion
At one point in the film, members of the Resistance talk about how they've sent out a distress signal to their allies - a signal that goes unanswered.
While this is disappointing, it shows that the Resistance is much bigger than the small group we're shown on Crait, with small factions spread throughout the galaxy.
At the end of the film, Poe, Finn, Rose and a few other Resistance fighters board the Millennium Falcon to escape the First Order, but their destination (if they have one) isn't made clear.
What is clear is that they'll need help. A lot of help. They're outgunned and outnumbered by the First Order, and will need as many soldiers as they can get if they're going to "burn the First Order down", as Poe bluntly puts it.
And this, combined with the fact that we know there are other Resistance members grouped on different planets, makes it likely that Episode IX will show these different groups come together.
Now that the story of Luke's final stand is beginning to spread, the spark of hope has been lit, on a galaxy-wide scale. People will hear this call to arms and link up with the Resistance, giving them the strength to vanquish the First Order for good.
