4. The Truth About Rey's Parents

Hand-in-hand with the lack of closure on Snoke, The Last Jedi's reveal regarding Rey's true parentage is another moment that has particularly angered a vocal portion of Star Wars fandom.

As a seemingly orphaned child on a remote desert planet who proves to be unusually strong with the Force, Rey fits a similar description to Luke Skywalker, leading to speculation that she was part of his bloodline: perhaps his daughter, or a second child of Han and Leia. Then again, given she was spoken to by Obi-Wan during her vision in The Force Awakens, Rey might be a Kenobi. Or maybe she could even be the child of the similarly mysterious Snoke.

However, The Last Jedi dismisses all this. Kylo Ren, having searched Rey's mind with his more trained skills with the Force, confirms to her that which he says she has always known: that her parents were complete nobodies, who abandoned her on Jakku simply because they did not want the inconvenience of raising her.

Given that this information comes from Kylo, it has resulted in yet more fan theories, suggesting that he is manipulating her with lies. However, given the strength of the bond that grows between the two, this does not seem likely; just as he sees into her, she sees into him, and as such she would recognise such a lie. Even if Snoke forged their bond to begin with, it clearly endures beyond his death.

Moreso, this is another plot development that is vital to The Last Jedi's core theme: the past does not control the future, and the legend isn't always true. As Luke explains, the Force is part of everything, thereby accessible by anyone, regardless of parentage. It makes no difference where Rey comes from; all that matters is where she is headed.

Ben Bussey hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
