Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 13 Audacious Moments That Have Divided Fans

10. The Link Between Rey And Kylo Ren

That unexpected meeting of minds between Rey and Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens would seem to have laid the groundwork for an even less expected development in The Last Jedi - a new, hitherto unseen Jedi power which some have deemed too great an embellishment of series lore.

In a development which initially seems like a crossover with Sense8 (check that out on Netflix if you haven't already), Rey and Kylo suddenly find their minds connecting across many lightyears of space. While both are initially horrified, their ensuing dialogue sees them grow to recognise more common ground than either expected.

While this may have put some viewers off, it's both an intriguing evolution of the Jedi, and a compelling narrative device. Star Wars, after all, is strongly rooted in mythology, with light and dark forces opposing one another; yet, with the unforgettable revelation of Luke and Leia's parentage, the series also explores how the light and the dark are quite literally interrelated.

Building a kinship of sorts between the new trilogy's principal hero and principal villain is in its own way a development of this, and it allows for some excellent dramatic moments, making the most of the excellent Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver.

And of course, we can scarcely fail to note the clear underlying sexual tension generated in these moments, including but not limited to Driver's (gratuitous?) shirtless scene. If the mightiest Sith Lord can father the Jedi who saves the galaxy, who's to say the new personifications of the light and the dark side can't fall in love?
