The Question: It was genuinely surprising that General Leia survived the events of the movie, considering that Rian Johnson created numerous scenarios for the character to be given a tidy death.

Instead, she's still alive when the end credits roll on The Last Jedi, leaving fans wondering how, exactly, Leia's going to be written out of the series.

The Likely Answer: There's one blindingly obvious solution here, and it's to have Episode IX's opening crawl declare, "Princess Leia is dead", before the film opens with her funeral.

Having her die a natural, peaceful death makes the most sense, because sidelining her to a distant planet or contriving some over-elaborate excuse for her absence will most likely play horribly with fans.

A dignified death is really the best case scenario here, and would also give the story some organic poignancy, because Leia's funeral will sure be one hell of a sight to see.
