For better or worse, The Force Awakens stuck close to the template laid out by the very first Star Wars movie, hitting the same structural beats and blending the familiar with some new concepts. It took the notion of Star Wars Episodes 'rhyming' to another level, but leaves the question of whether or not that will continue moving forwards.

We've already heard talk of how The Last Jedi will 'do an Empire' by going darker, but what about in terms of its plot. Is Luke training Rey going to clearly mirror Yoda training Luke? Is the Battle of Crait just the Battle of Hoth with slightly different colours? Is there going to be a dramatic, shocking twist?

At the same time, The Force Awakens did have some beats from Empire too - a big family reveal, Snoke fulfilling a similar purpose to Palpatine - that there could well be a lot more freedom for The Last Jedi to do its own, more unique thing.
