Initially, The Force Awakens was going to open with Luke's severed hand floating through space, which would've setup the lightsaber as the movie's Macguffin. This was clearly the plan for some time - see the shots of it being handed over in the trailers - and changed to the map fairly late in the day.

The lightsaber did still have a big part to play in the movie, as Rey touches it and has various visions - and then tries to hand it to Luke at the very end - but the changes mean that how it got from Bespin to Takodana remains a massive question.

Maz Kanata said it's a question for another time, and, well, that time is surely now. With the lightsaber officially being called Rey's (rather than Anakin's or Luke's) by Lucasfilm's marketing team, her using it during the film, and Maz Kanata returning, surely we'll get an answer in the movie. What the hell that'll be is anyone's guess.
