14. Where Are The Other Students?

At various points in Rey's communications with Luke and Kylo Ren, we get to see the story of the destruction of the Jedi school pieced together, and Luke relates that Ren "and some of his other students" fled in the wake of the attack. Presumably, they became the Knights Of Ren, but it's never actually confirmed - and neither is the whereabouts of these other presumably semi-trained Jedi traitors.

Wouldn't they be useful to Ren and the First Order? Are we just to accept that they were all killed off quietly? Or that they've been swallowed up by the First Order and are no longer of individual note? And if that's the case, why bother with the Knights Of Ren teases in The Force Awakens and the mention of other surviving students here?

The story also remains somewhat incomplete as the complete account makes no attempt to explain why Ren destroyed the school and killed most of the students when he was supposed to be fleeing in fear. The idea of him fighting Luke made sense out of desperation, but the leap to cold-blooded murder really doesn't fit with the logic of the story.
