The first thing Johnson says about Vice Admiral Holdo is how great it was working with Laura Dern, "who, God bless her, didn't flinch when I said 'let's go with purple'."

The character of Holdo evolved in editing and with pick-up shots. Originally she was much more of a "hippy dippy" character, the opposite of what you'd expect from a military leader type, but the initial take was "too much" and "a little too spacey."
