The question 'what is the Force?' is something that Johnson wanted to examine in this movie.

He needed to explain that "it's not a superpower. It’s not like making things float, it’s not like an Iron Man-type superpower that you get, or Iron Man doesn’t have super powers, I know I know I know I know. Iron Man’s suit does everything. It's not like a Superman thing."

Instead, he wanted to show it in a more spiritual, gentler way, which gives us the scene with Luke and Rey and the shot pushing in on Rey, which Johnson says might be the longest single shot of the whole movie.
