The idea of Canto Bight being a glamorous, Monte Carlo-inspired locale for the galaxy's 1% to hang out was an idea that came very early in writing process. The shot moving over all the tables in Casino was inspired by Wings (the first ever Best Picture winner), as a way of taking everything in and being overwhelmed by the design of the Casino.

They didn't have the correct crane equipment that you'd normally use for the shot, so instead a camera was mounted on a truss between two dollies, and the actors all had to duck as it passed them so they didn't get hit on the head.

The casino was also a challenge for the costume department, as they had to be just black and white, but also elegant rather than baroque or overly sci-fi.
