Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 39 Things We Learned From The Director's Commentary
37. The Original Opening
The movie opens in the midst of space, but the original opening was something different and much quieter. The pan down instead landed on the bacta tank, which we'd initially think was a planet before revealing John Boyega's Finn in the suit. Then it would cut to the bombing sequence, and eventually back to Finn getting up and walking around the hallways.
It was changed, however, because it was "too clever and too long." Johnson realised that in a Star Wars movie you "have you get to it as quickly as possible," and that the scenes could be better connected up and we didn't need to see Finn until we really needed to see him.
