Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 8 Parents J.J. Most Likely Wanted For Rey

Undoubtedly, Abrams loves Obi-Wan. He loves Obi-Wan in A New Hope so much that he made sure to have Kylo Ren's real name be Ben Solo, named after 'Old Ben' Kenobi.

This theory was among the more persistent online rumors. A great many people read facets of Rey's character such as her outfit, her Force abilities, and even her ability to sneak swiftly around Starkiller Base as obvious signs she was a descendant of Kenobi.

Those parallels are absolutely there if you're looking for them. It's also worth noting that Abrams got Ewan McGregor to record some dialogue for them to layer in and mix in with Guinness' own during Rey's Force vision sequence, so it clearly mattered to him that Obi-Wan tells her "these are your first steps".

Having Rey be a Kenobi does fit with Abrams' and Star Wars' usual tropes of lineage and parenthood, so it's easy to see why Abrams might have considered this.

But also, keep in mind that Yoda also speaks to Rey during that Force vision and there weren't thousands of Reddit chains about why he was clearly her father. And that in order for Obi-Wan to be even her grandfather, he would have had to have left a child he fathered behind on Tatooine in between Episode III and Episode IV. So maybe deadbeat dad Obi-Wan wasn't such a great idea after all.
