Star Wars: The Last Jedi Official Trailer Breakdown - 28 Things You Need To See
16. Leia And Kylo
We then move much more clearly into the struggles with the past Kylo Ren is going to deal with in this movie (oh, and he's covering that scar up with a bandage). He killed his father in The Force Awakens, and now he's going to come back into contact with his mother, Leia.
The trailer cuts back-and-forth between the two, showing what's seemingly going to be quite a powerful scene. They're both attuned to the Force, and can sense the other's presence, and we see Kylo clearly pained by the idea of destroying the spaceship his mother is on - which is why he most likely doesn't go through with it.
There's no actual way Leia dies here - we know she was supposed to be a big part of Episode IX, and her role in VIII has been unchanged - but it's going to be a tense sequence either way, if Leia is indeed on the ship Kylo is targeting (it could well be tricksy editing, but this one doesn't seem like a misdirect).
Carrie Fisher looks great here, and is probably going to be awesome in the movie, but it's hard not to feel a pang of emotion everytime Leia appears. The marketing thus far, though, has been very respectful and perfectly pitched in that regard.
This sequence also gives us a chance to really see Kylo Ren's new ship, the TIE Silencer, in action. Even if he's intent on leaving the past behind, it's still giving off a Vader aesthetic (especially the way it spins around).
