Star Wars: The Last Jedi Teaser - 5 Similarities And 3 Big Differences To The Force Awakens

2. The Runtime

When viewed on the official Star Wars YouTube channel, The Last Jedi's teaser clocks in at two minutes and twelve seconds, while The Force Awakens' teaser runs for just one minute and thirty-eight seconds.

That major runtime gap can be explained by the marketing timeline each film had to play with.

The Force Awakens was the first Star Wars movie in ten years, so it could start its marketing campaign as far back as it wanted without cannibalising hype from another film in the franchise.

So, when the teaser dropped over a year before the film's release, it didn't need to show much because there was still plenty of time left to release more trailers, more spots and more footage.

The Last Jedi, on the other hand, wasn't in a similar situation. It couldn't release a teaser a year in advance because that may have interfered with the huge amount of buzz surrounding 2016's franchise spinoff, Rogue One.

As a result, the marketing team has a much shorter lead time than they did for The Force Awakens, so this time, their first teaser had to be a lot more substantial - and a lot longer - to make up for all those months they lost while Rogue One was in the way.
