It just wouldn't be a new Star Wars film without some new locations to visit, and the Vanity Fair cover story reveals a couple of them.

The trailer showcased a desert planet, at which point it was speculated that it could be Tatooine or Jakku. Now we know that it's actually Pasaana, which was filmed in Jordan’s Wadi Rum desert. The planet is home to native creatures called the Aki-Aki, because of course new planets mean new aliens.

Describing the decision to shoot out in the desert, where they had to build a small town in the middle of nowhere, Oscar Isaac recalls wondering the reasons after seeing a green screen, and Abrams telling him: "'Well, because look: the way that the sand interacts with the light, and the type of shots you would set up—if you were designing the shot on a computer you would never even think to do that.’ There’s something about the way that the light and the environment and everything plays together.”

If a desert planet is the most iconic Star Wars setting, then a snow planet has to be a close second. Hoth remains one of the most memorable locales in the saga, and it was echoed in The Force Awakens with Starkiller Base. Much like Abrams is giving us his second new desert planet, he's given us a second snowy one too, with the planet Kijimi described as a "snow-dusted world".
