4. Chewie Gets A Medal

Perhaps the most well-earned and lovingly executed piece of fan service in the entire movie is the climatic moment where Chewie finally receives a medal for all his heroic work, one given to him by Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong'o), as was presumably bequeathed by General Leia.

This finally resolves a long-standing bugbear among fans that Chewie never received a medal for his efforts in A New Hope.

At the time, Lucas insisted that medals don't really mean much to Wookiees and he was given a fully-fledged hero's welcome when returning home, even if this wasn't made apparent by the movie itself.

But seeing Chewie finally get a piece of gold was nothing if not cathartic for a fanbase that's never stopped voicing their displeasure about Chewie seemingly getting the short shrift.
