Leaked promotional material for The Rise of Skywalker showcased C3PO wielding an old Wookie bowcaster, and the trailer before the most recent one showed the faithful protocol droid with red eyes, implying that he's about to take on a more fierce demeanour in the next sequel.
Monday's trailer teases this turn even further - so long as you look past the heartbreaking tragedy of C3PO saying goodbye for good. Babu Frik is seen performing maintenance on Anthony Daniels' loyal droid, and it looks as though it's because he'll be going into action.
If you look to the right of Threepio, you'll notice that there's an old, decommissioned, Clone Wars-era Battle Droid hung up in Frik's workshop. One would surmise some of that Battle Droid's circuitry winds up in Threepio's body, and it's there where we'll probably see him wielding blasters.
