Speaking of things that could have been left out - or more pertinently things that Abrams and his paymasters clearly decided OUGHT to be left out - lots of The Last Jedi is effectively just ignored in the interest of exploring an entirely new narrative.

There are some things that tie back to the preceding movie - like Snoke and Rey and Kylo's relationship - but for the most part, the opening 20 minutes are so exist as a sort of extended montage that replaces all of the important story details in that film with something else entirely.

Sure, things definitely happened in the recent past and every now and then we get mentions of things, but it's all so dismissively handled - so much so, in fact, that there are lines in there that feel like direct addresses to the audience dealing with "problems" with The Last Jedi.

And one character - Rose - is so erroneously mistreated and very cynically so, that it's impossible not to feel a little sad at how she was handled. Being left out entirely would probably have been preferable.
