Critic Consensus: "Star Wars: The Last Jedi honors the saga's rich legacy while adding some surprising twists -- and delivering all the emotion-rich action fans could hope for."

Perhaps the most decisive film on the list, Rian Johnson took over the directors chair for this instalment and gave the audience a story which features the return of Luke Skywalker, who Rey seeks out to train her as a Jedi. Meanwhile, the First Order continues its war with the Resistance.

The film was met with a harsh backlash from some fans due to the characterisation of Luke Skywalker and some narrative decisions that seemed to contradict the teases established in The Force Awakens. That said, The Last Jedi stands tall as a terrific film individually.

Luke Skywalker's characterisation feels natural, with the much scrutinised moment where Luke senses the darkness within Ben showing the character is only human. The connection between Rey and Ben is also something that was done well in the film and expanded upon in The Rise of Skywalker. Johnson also gave fans one of the best duels in the series, as Kylo Ren and Rey battle Snoke's guards in his throne room.

While there are certainly fans who dislike the film due to it seemingly abandoning plot points put forward by Abrams, The Last Jedi stands out as a stellar film when looked at as an individual story.
