Star Wars: A Visual History
8. Star Wars: Special Editions (1977)
With the prequels well under way, George Lucas decided to both reward the loyal fanbase the Expanded Universe had reborn and get the rest of the world hyped for his new movies by re-releasing the classic trilogy.
The old films were a little worse for wear after years in storage, so he decided to clean them up, removing the dirt from the print and improving the many compositing issues.
Of course, he didn't stop there. Each of the movies has numerous changes, with CGI alteration, reinserted scenes and, most egregiously, Greedo shooting at Han, causing mass fan upset.
