Star Wars: A Visual History
9. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
The most anticipated movie of all time, The Phantom Menace showed fans the early days of Anakin Skywalker, presenting a kindly slave a universe away from the rasping oppressor of the Originals Trilogy.
Introducing politics and Jar Jar Binks to the Star Wars galaxy, the film has become notorious as a disappointment, although it sits above both Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull and The Hobbit Trilogy is terms of late-in-the-day revisits.
The movie was actually initially well-received (and remains the highest grossing entry in the saga, unadjusted for inflation), but a strong backlash has totally coloured it's legacy - following a 3D re-release it's the only main Star Wars with a rotten rating on RottenTomatoes.
