Steven Spielberg: EVERY Movie Ranked Worst To Best

2. Jaws (1975)

ET The Extra Terrestrial
Universal

This was it. The birth of the blockbuster, and the birth of Steven Spielberg, the great director. Jaws is nothing short of a masterpiece of tension, action and atmosphere.

The power of the film is not the scares brought about by the shark, but how little we actually see it. Why the film works is down to the fear of the open ocean, the fear the three men feel, and the fact that the shark is there, somewhere, waiting to strike.

Jaws is Spielberg at his finest, creating character out of tension and horror. The dialogue between Brody (Roy Schneider), Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and Quint (Robert Shaw) makes the bulk of the movie, leaving the shark as second fiddle to the human relationships of the story.

When the shark does turn up, it steals the show, offering scares and ensuring you never go near the ocean again.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
