Steven Spielberg: Ranking His Movies From Worst To Best

26. Always (1989)

always I always defend Spielberg against critics who accuse him of being overly saccharine and emotionally manipulative. However, this is one of the only films in his body of work that I simply cannot defend in such a matter. This love triangle story involving the ghost of a dead pilot, his protege, and his lover is just a little too sweet, even for my taste. The filmmaking is solid and the performances from the three stellar leads are reliable. But overall, the film's over-sentimentality is quite off-putting.
