Suicide Squad: 10 Characters Who Could Steal The Show
7. Rick Flag
Rick Flag is the army official tasked with wrangling the Squad. The comic book source material features three generations of Flag. Its unclear which version Kinnaman is playing the original, his son, or his grandson (all of whom have had dealings with supervillains). What is known is that the role was originally intended for Tom Hardy, but RoboCop reboot star Joel Kinnaman ended up taking the part when Hardys work on The Revenant drastically overran. These days, Hardy isnt the type to circle uninteresting supporting roles, so there must be more to Mr Flag than meets the eye. In the trailers, it looks like Kinnaman's filmic Flag is tasked with bringing a wry sense of humour to proceedings (e.g. the roll-call scene, the "What is wrong with you people?" line). Few fans would say no to some laughs in a DC movie, so thats a nice touch, but it still seems likely that theres another layer or two to his character. Itd be interesting if the movie version has a dark family history linked to historical events in the DC Extended Universe. Thatd provide some meaty material for Kinnaman, and possibly explain why Hardy was so keen to take the role. A haunted hero who uses humour to hide his hatred for his villainous teammates is far more interesting that a generic army guy, after all.
