Suicide Squad: 10 Major New Details You Need To Know About The Ayer Cut

9. Joker's Original Role In The Final Battle

A scene from the trailers which has really resonated with fans is the sight of Jared Leto's Joker waving a grenade and rocking a badly burned face. That was obviously nowhere to be seen in the final cut, and is believed to have been a victim of Warner Bros. wanting to lighten the tone of Suicide Squad after fans and critics reacted negatively to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

In the theatrical version, The Joker pushed Harley Quinn from that helicopter to save her life, but he originally attempted to kill her for showing compassion for her fellow Task Force X members. Believed dead, the Clown Prince of Crime would have then made a surprise return during the final battle.

"After Joker dropped [Harley] from the [helicopter] and crashed, Enchantress made a deal with him," Ayer confirms. "He was going to take Harley home and be 'King of Gotham.' Harley stood up to him and refused to betray her new friends. The Squad turned on him and he escaped."

Well, that sounds far more empowering for Harley Quinn than her being saved by her Puddin' and then spending an entire spinoff film emphasising how terrible men are while dealing with a breakup, eh?
